Benchmarking the Asia Pacific tourism industry: A Bayesian combination of DEA and stochastic frontier
نویسنده
چکیده
This study measures and compares the efficiency of leading tour operator and hotel companies across several Asia Pacific countries. We use an innovative methodology that is based on combining the stochastic frontier and data envelopment analysis in a Bayes framework. We show from the results that Australia, Singapore and South Korea are the most efficient in both their tour operator and hotel industries. We further show that international hotels in the region have a slightly higher efficiency than local hotels. We provide a listing of the most efficient tour operators and hotels in each country and discuss the implications of our findings. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Estimating the Technical Improvement of Energy Efficiency in the Automotive Industry—Stochastic and Deterministic Frontier Benchmarking Approaches
The car manufacturing industry, one of the largest energy consuming industries, has been making a considerable effort to improve its energy intensity by implementing energy efficiency programs, in many cases supported by government research or financial programs. While many car manufacturers claim that they have made substantial progress in energy efficiency improvement over the past years thro...

This paper reports a survey and case study research outcomes on the application of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to the ranking method of European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Business Excellence Model in Iran’s Automotive Industry and improving benchmarking process after assessment. Following the global trend, the Iranian industry leaders have introduced the EFQM practice to thei...
متن کاملBest-practice benchmarking using clustering methods: Application to energy regulation
Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is widely used as a benchmarking tool for improving productive performance of decision making units (DMUs). The benchmarks produced by DEA are obtained as a sideproduct of computing efficiency scores. As a result, the benchmark units may differ from the evaluated DMU in terms of their input–output profiles and the scale size. Moreover, the DEA benchmarks may oper...
متن کاملA Comparative Appraisal of Roadway Accident for Asia-Pacific Countries
This paper describes an attempt to shed some light on road safety in Asia Pacific region by characterizing and assessing its road accidents. The relevant national road accident data were extracted from centralized data sources of international agencies. Due to data incompleteness and missing values, 21 Asia Pacific countries, presenting more than half of the world’s population, were selected fo...
متن کاملA sequence of targets toward a common best practice frontier in DEA
Original data envelopment analysis models treat decision-making units as independent entities. This feature of data envelopment analysis results in significant diversity in input and output weights, which is irrelevant and problematic from the managerial point of view. In this regard, several methodologies have been developed to measure the efficiency scores based on common weights. Specificall...
